These are not the only formats available, but these are the most widely used.</span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">JPG or "Joint Photographic Experts Group" is commonly used for digital photography. This format has been around since about 1992. Maybe you use the format when uploading photos to your social networking site such a facebook. This format compresses the file size to manageable size for web transfer; however, it is a "lossy" format. Meaning, each time the file is saved as a .jpg, info is lost by compression. Do not save original source files from design programs to .jpg for this reason. </span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">GIF or " Graphic Interchange Format" has been around since about 1987. It is an 8 bit format, meaning it uses only 256 colors. It is a "lossless" format and supports transparency. You say " what does that mean, supports tranpsency?" Well, for example, when you try to place your business logo on a colored background or predesigned web template with a cool background and you get that white box behind it—that is totally distracting—from the page layout, and makes your logo look like a brick… that file is not supporting transparency. Therefore, because it supports transparency, GIF is often the best file type to use for logos and icons. GIF even supports some minor animation.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">PNG or " Portable Network Graphics" is a "lossless" (no compression, no data lost) format that supports transparency and millions of colors. So it seems like this would be the best format hands down, why not just use PNG all the time? PNGs creates a large file size and are not supported by some of the older web browsers. As web standards progress, this will probably be the best choice for logos and icons.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">PDF or "Portable Document Format" is used for printable files. It is used universally by MAC and Windows based computers. PDFs are what you would supply to your printer for business cards, flyers, brochures, etc. PDFs are exported from many different computer software programs like the Adobe Create Suite 5, also known as CS5. There are many different ways to save a PDFs from these programs. I would encourage you to find and build a relationship with a printer in your area. From my experience, a good relationship with a printer is invaluable. I like to use Arnie at Pronto Print in the Medford area. It is a lovely building—the subject of many tourist's photographs. The church is over 100 years old—which is old for the west coast. At the end of the Oregon Trail, is a gold mining town called Jacksonville, established in 1800s. From the roots of the town, the First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville has been here, since 1881. The church has outgrown the old historic building, but still remains in town at a new location. Many of the original building's wonderful architectural characteristics were used in the design of the new structure.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV6StjpDhrP5COuOCKek_h73sFvNbQ-efIoEHUNT6QAKUwtDMtXQYegP7JRlKA2sQOr_xS2TSqvFZvn3gkiU5UOFWIx-VgMJtZX7-o4aIXDFwzAV1SyfUViMnHElchN-jywDdYakfp-Y8/s1600/j'ville3.jpg"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV6StjpDhrP5COuOCKek_h73sFvNbQ-efIoEHUNT6QAKUwtDMtXQYegP7JRlKA2sQOr_xS2TSqvFZvn3gkiU5UOFWIx-VgMJtZX7-o4aIXDFwzAV1SyfUViMnHElchN-jywDdYakfp-Y8/s400/j'ville3.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5464307217749410530" style="cursor: pointer; width: 130px; height: 80px; " /></a></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small; ">photo by Tonya Pontevint</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville </span></span></div><div><a href="http://www.jvillepres.org/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">http://www.jvillepres.org/</span></span></a></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">425 Middle Street, PO Box 297<br />Jacksonville, Oregon 97530<br />Phone: 541-899-1287</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">So what color is your church? Mimi gets tired of the rain most days, but today she welcomed it because it kept her indoors to paint. The frogs are croaking, and last night the air smelled of blossoms. It is no wonder Mimi would paint flowers again. Somehow her painting—as well as her mood—has been influenced by the rain. The lack of sunshine in the sky has shown up in her painting. Still only three colors have been used on her palette, red, blue and yellow. It is helping somewhat with color harmony and she is getting better at mixing colors. Mimi is still working on focal point and foreground vs. background. If you have any helpful information, leave Holly a comment and she will pass it along to Mimi.</span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, serif;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-1gf8L77wCurzcZJEWuNreJzmcXKSS3i1bHFJU8VVfmh2_Dhyphenhyphenik0q6wq5uLzMXM0Dn2SfI5ul_FJdamLxahwDdZ7J4ksCxPnKVaEOVl4FNqNCrCjnCTMAdrHzBqTLZkxwFVr1M4jrvNc/s1600/DSCN0769.JPG"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-1gf8L77wCurzcZJEWuNreJzmcXKSS3i1bHFJU8VVfmh2_Dhyphenhyphenik0q6wq5uLzMXM0Dn2SfI5ul_FJdamLxahwDdZ7J4ksCxPnKVaEOVl4FNqNCrCjnCTMAdrHzBqTLZkxwFVr1M4jrvNc/s400/DSCN0769.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462305676712745938" style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 258px; " /></a></span></span></div></div>Holly Herickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00315599481439237858noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514989092957308632.post-16014425808349337572010-04-16T19:47:00.000-07:002010-04-16T20:01:37.595-07:00Poppies for Sandy<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXcM1LtN5_Qj6uOXyI6sXCjfHYmEfXlDuYs3uGRwMj3dZyhsGbAJfZ4DeDL4U6C5uklftLjeUVuzJvKdJInR1OAr1EBukGODmENbmtYhBvY-ti8wqfaHmwnp24y9RgOJpxIwLq2McjF0c/s1600/DSCN0469.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXcM1LtN5_Qj6uOXyI6sXCjfHYmEfXlDuYs3uGRwMj3dZyhsGbAJfZ4DeDL4U6C5uklftLjeUVuzJvKdJInR1OAr1EBukGODmENbmtYhBvY-ti8wqfaHmwnp24y9RgOJpxIwLq2McjF0c/s400/DSCN0469.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5460934862122899474" /></a><div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXcM1LtN5_Qj6uOXyI6sXCjfHYmEfXlDuYs3uGRwMj3dZyhsGbAJfZ4DeDL4U6C5uklftLjeUVuzJvKdJInR1OAr1EBukGODmENbmtYhBvY-ti8wqfaHmwnp24y9RgOJpxIwLq2McjF0c/s1600/DSCN0469.JPG"></a><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">What inspires you? Winter, Mimi thinks, might have been warmer than spring. Finally this week the butterflies and bees will come out and do what they should. Mimi watches them pollinate and transform life in an amazing adventure. Mimi says—enjoy spring. Here at Creative Home, we believe in observing everything, alive, from nature. There is nothing more amazing than what God has created before our very own eyes.<div><br /><div><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 252px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhosyyFObmIgO5wljtLfazqZ_P4tlBdoV0lX85p0MJJo9l_tuGv5zmOm4nTfL30R9wFjjhxesnrIhn6VdcyiYTZFFTdlTwhNCXPWCeBQEYxPMhUBUyA9guywmfFxI95eXW4yaZqQsfniTc/s400/DSCN0371.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459453770478093762" /></div></div>Holly Herickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00315599481439237858noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514989092957308632.post-10533199604347662372010-04-07T16:57:00.000-07:002010-04-07T16:57:24.768-07:00Official International Fake Journal Blog: The 2010 International Fake Journal Month Contest<a href="http://officialinternationalfakejournalblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/2010-international-fake-journal-month.html">Official International Fake Journal Blog: The 2010 International Fake Journal Month Contest</a>Holly Herickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00315599481439237858noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514989092957308632.post-56315888789409256572010-04-07T15:40:00.000-07:002010-04-07T16:02:56.177-07:00Dreaming of fresh apples by "Mimi"<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7PjMwNiXZJV3YxZMR5mVbSg1sy-1a7l_nQvwiTWhAvhCCqU1Y06vYITBhizJhMcuwXHZMnEygchsjLSwkgAEvpPkAUZN4EPPd6LCyJ-5O6orEHNqqTsUorxa3QF7P_kTEmtb816ObcmI/s1600/DSCN0267.JPG"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 372px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7PjMwNiXZJV3YxZMR5mVbSg1sy-1a7l_nQvwiTWhAvhCCqU1Y06vYITBhizJhMcuwXHZMnEygchsjLSwkgAEvpPkAUZN4EPPd6LCyJ-5O6orEHNqqTsUorxa3QF7P_kTEmtb816ObcmI/s400/DSCN0267.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457532293847313506" /></span></span></a><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7PjMwNiXZJV3YxZMR5mVbSg1sy-1a7l_nQvwiTWhAvhCCqU1Y06vYITBhizJhMcuwXHZMnEygchsjLSwkgAEvpPkAUZN4EPPd6LCyJ-5O6orEHNqqTsUorxa3QF7P_kTEmtb816ObcmI/s1600/DSCN0267.JPG"></a><br />As I enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine today decided to work in my IFJ, "International Fake Journal." If you don't know what this is, then you missed my last post. International Fake Journal Month is a challenge for artist to focus on art from a different perspective or persona and journal about it. Mimi, my alter ego, is studying watercolors. She is only using red, blue and yellow—the primary colors—"very efficient". Mimi is also working on focal point and color harmony. What inspires Mimi, you never know. Mimi takes her sketch book with her everywhere now. She likes to look at life large, yet crop in on what's most important "of course." </span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Here is Mimi's Journal Entry for "Day Five."</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 252px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsTkhEwbMNjZoR24r_lHsk3aA7kFJGkD1rtadpVEU8DJQ3UUMGykhG1Mg-U3lMQCxQg6apxhUgPZA-ueZZCAKEdzzR3N_OZAe0gvooJ2wCKIdgNkt1Wq2z8-cF-h4lYctopvLBDjEAZlk/s400/DSCN0266.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457532302589610562" /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">As I painted, all the colors were vibrant and everything was popping forward. Here is a hint I got from a fabulous children's book author, <a href="http://leewhiteillustration.blogspot.com/">Lee White</a>. Glaze over the background with the color opposite on the color wheel. For example, I used red to glaze over the green leaves and take the intensity of the color back so the apple would pop forward. Red, yellow, and blue. The primary colors make up all colors on the color wheel and Mimi likes to be efficient— why bother with anything that is not needed. Mimi has decided that she will paint at least three times a week for the month of April. Hereby known as "International Fake Journal Month" or IFJM. In this journal she will study primary colors with watercolor paints, focusing on color harmony and focal point. Mimi likes to make a point. Only perfection, only necessities. Mimi says things like, "of course" and "I knew that" or "practice makes <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, serif; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', serif; ">p<span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;">erfect." I believe the more I sketch and paint the better graphic designer I will be. Now, you may know that I studied graphic design in college. I had many illustration classes, but they never really taught us how to use the different mediums. It was more like, "Draw a vegetable with Prismacolor pencil" or "Illustrate an emotion with watercolor paints." Now I try to dedicate three hours, three times a week toward sketching or painting. As I improve, I get more done in those three hours—and make less of a mess doing it. The idea of dedicated studio space is becoming more and more of a need instead of a want. Every time I paint, my kitchen shuts down—which is not good considering how much my family eats. I have joined a group on FB called Virtual Paintout which uses Google Street View for inspiration to illustrate from. Google Street View is copyright free as long as you are creating art from it. It truly is a wonderful way to virtually travel the world. Every Month a new location is chosen. Here is my first attempt: location, Stavanger, Norway.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style=" ;font-family:Georgia, serif;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3q3f5zNx3bGDAeR6SUZyym3w7deiB5JhueVwDWFN2f7LQ7uH6sOYND-7Bs-NVvumUs1h5Lf_L5YOQuC6VmDzAJX5WkFsnu-JbuEn7JNk7ET6VTfLLX5h2_gevE449JWbOSQvh3E55VS4/s1600/norway.jpg"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3q3f5zNx3bGDAeR6SUZyym3w7deiB5JhueVwDWFN2f7LQ7uH6sOYND-7Bs-NVvumUs1h5Lf_L5YOQuC6VmDzAJX5WkFsnu-JbuEn7JNk7ET6VTfLLX5h2_gevE449JWbOSQvh3E55VS4/s400/norway.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5454946037106122210" style="cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 317px; " /></span></a><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3q3f5zNx3bGDAeR6SUZyym3w7deiB5JhueVwDWFN2f7LQ7uH6sOYND-7Bs-NVvumUs1h5Lf_L5YOQuC6VmDzAJX5WkFsnu-JbuEn7JNk7ET6VTfLLX5h2_gevE449JWbOSQvh3E55VS4/s1600/norway.jpg"></a></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">I think the only thing I like about it is the trees, maybe the sky, but no worries, I am learning and it is much more important to like where you end up, than like where you start. I had some very good critiqing from one of my favorite children's book artist. His name is Lee White check out this blog about him </span><a href="http://amy-baskin.blogspot.com/2010/03/crazy-day-with-lee-white.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">http://amy-baskin.blogspot.com/2010/03/crazy-day-with-lee-white.html</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> I need to work on focal point, and color harmony—just about everything. I can't wait to use the information He gave me on my next painting. Another excellent site—for learning watercolor technique— </span><a href="http://www.johnlovett.com/class.htm"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">http://www.johnlovett.com/class.htm</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> I have been reading all day on watercolor techniques and viewing all I can find. If you are interested in taking this journey with me check out </span><a href="http://www.creativetechs.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">creativetechs.com</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"> and sign up for Molly Murrah's watercolor 101 starting soon. It is free if you watch it live—what a bargain. </span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">As my age inevitably increases, I find myself surprised at how much I am turning back to the fine arts as opposed to computer arts—fine arts are constant and the computer arts are changing faster than my hair is turning gray—there is some security in that. I encourage all of my friends to challenge their brains with something new every day. It doesn't have to be art. Try a new recipe, start a journal, try a new sport, rearrange your furniture, for goodness sakes, I don't know—just turn off the TV and do it.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;">Update: A new challenge from a blog called the International Fake Journal Blog can be reached by clicking the "dog icon" on my side margin. I plan to take this challenge. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms', serif;">artist friends, please join me.</span></div></span></span></div>Holly Herickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00315599481439237858noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514989092957308632.post-56031044917552747042010-03-27T08:33:00.000-07:002010-03-27T09:28:06.126-07:00You know it when it is right<span style="font-weight:bold;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;">So recently, I have been working on a logo for a very talented photographer and friend, Tim Tidball. This is one of my favorite shots of his.</span></span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><br /></span><div> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 363px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfMVgvfi_CcMIF4X8YX8VQnf17yLca1blQNeXavxlU-gNEJ9YHJfKIhzXbVocuywl5ihGKmAFTKRPB5vGbZUevO6NgI4khgg4UxDFDbGhGM0_Lt0plUoSmnbEuNqajsv4zYN0D6QdAykM/s400/girl.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5453344131161210162" /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Trying to capture what he does was difficult. He needed to stand out from other photographers by having his own identifying mark. It took about a month to get it right. I had an initial concept that was perfect, but the execution was not. Tim liked it, but needed to see more. So I kept sketching thumbnails and mocking up logos—still not right. We went rounds and rounds; trying to capture Tim and his work in one image was proving to be one of the more challenging logo jobs I had worked on—but I love a good challenge.</span></span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">Tim creates "Art in the Moment" capturing emotion, nuance and quickly fading memories. Do you remember as a child, or even as a parent, the special moment of blowing on a dandelion and watching the seeds magically float through the air. The joy and the lightness, the effortless movement lasts only a fleeting moment and then it is gone. This is what Tim is able to capture with his creative skills and raw talent behind the lens. I kept telling him things like "I won't give up until we get it right," and "We'll know it when we get it right." It is finally right.</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">I would love to show you the whole process, but unfortunately my camera is broken—yes I dropped it—so I will just upload the final logo.</span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:large;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'trebuchet ms';">You can give Tim a call at 541.770.1610. With extra time on her hands (Courtney, not me), I wanted to inspire her to paint. She loves art. Our quick sketch idea turned into quite an ordeal—five hours. First we looked for inspiration at morgue.com—a great site of royalty free photos by creatives for creatives. We picked a flower we both liked and sent it to the printer. Easy, right?… No. The printer was not going to cooperate. An hour later, with printer "woman handled" (ugh), we had our inspiration printed out.<br /></span></span><div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 333px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3-I1TEy4tYx5WLdyFqYr4yScg6TAWvvsBhyphenhyphen0mTL68qGpq65nKUBu8nCru3LP51ReZFUvDBKquLEmmcr9TyYdxjE4MaNbT_LJ3bY9zCy30_FvW3QPK5y0xMPdBWd-lDDrEAR52h3aOlQ0/s400/Jb-flowers+(5).jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451964567610912434" /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">Inspiration Photo from morgue.com</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">Now, to transfer it onto the paper. I like to use the grid method in order to enlarge (see earlier post of "June Foxglove") the picture. In this case we decided to paint it at actual size, so we used graphite paper which allows you to trace right over the printout, thereby transferring the image to the water color paper. Place the graphite paper under the print-out and over the paper, trace the drawing.</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 343px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbLqbPl506i9MNxhxo0ihQf_JiMU8-TRsIfoB0PHpjMVcuUzHPNEPCuG-CCn9WBmtdbUMEKew0NaGyaGB6d_Vc_sFhOsPApodPgjLW6DrWjZulu5d0yob23aRJ2aPSJ89Mioe8CrAJ1uc/s400/100_9572.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451965445808422322" /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">Sketch</span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:arial;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium;">Because we were using my old college art supplies that are over 20 years (yes, I attended college when is was 5 years old) we thought it would be great to do some test painting. I get bored and want to try something new, this time it is a five week watercolor class. So I finally picked out one of my photos to paint. I used a grid to transfer in onto watercolor paper, and it sat for a whole week. Finally, tonight the background is started. Hopefully, it will inspire you to try something new. Take a peek.Holly Herickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00315599481439237858noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514989092957308632.post-46831373882664833122010-03-08T12:29:00.000-08:002010-03-08T13:41:59.932-08:00RefuelingSo what happens when a small town designer hits the city with her son to explore his education opportunities? For one, I remembered that there are buildings taller than two stories. Another, that book stores exist that cover the same square footage as our entire downtown. And finally, that I am a very small part of a much larger world. As a creative person it is so important to get out of your environment and see what others are doing, what's current, and look for inspiration. It can come from anything—buildings, bridges, trees, sky, clothing, books, signage—man made or God made use it all. Get out and refuel. Go somewhere new, or go to your favorite spot and clear your mind so you will have room for some new fresh ideas.Holly Herickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00315599481439237858noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514989092957308632.post-37679277894109694522010-02-24T13:39:00.001-08:002010-02-25T21:24:51.108-08:00SOGA Team Logo: bringing identity forward.<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKDbpEqv5dThKgoODr5L5xW6QNJEFLiQ7IXofnP43TxcdVtfqmd_lNSVD1i7uSUCWwOr1jPW1WWABgcGIi7TqaqyS9PoqpQPAV_V10umHfBhfl-y1tM0QLsgLKhQ-GPErS_GYaNgxZQGw/s320/sogalogoMEDcanvas.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441928713379444802" />Within the last year I have designed one logo that especially excites me. SOGA, the Southern Oregon Gymnastics Academy has a team that is really thriving. Before this logo, their identity was lost in a sea of generic images. Now, the team wears the mark proudly on the back of their jackets. The gymnasts have been working hard and have been competing better than ever. <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 117px; height: 130px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEge8DMjjzjBUpz2Fj8pDHSdzIDYqKjLxcoVEyzyxsjtMTbkihtTeRnsc9NMJVOuEUMPvGtZjPSjHk1VTiP_-cOP75H5yjq-tzBKHZm_kNmt3h6_ChLRHlbODOTyRWxbqTUoSwko1vUaIG8/s400/Soga.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5442417801820791890" />The gym is becoming quite well known in the western region of the US. I am proud to see the logo displayed in their gym, in flyers and on the team uniforms. I consider this one a success. See the photo below showing the logo applied to the team jacket.<div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Holly Herickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00315599481439237858noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514989092957308632.post-34119642031088252412010-02-20T22:46:00.002-08:002010-02-20T23:24:53.957-08:00Relaunching my Graphic Design Business<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOy7sCnuH7brdFLRxTDhy19VNqmBa5hhHsVbm3Rx5Nlr2FJpAWZYAQYIDMtwLw6_1sw8ICyXt2i4uC291_E7oC5UJMDdw0EMd_-tpYIv7rxfWITSA2DpDlBEq-Y0dtUtaulFbk52nDgqU/s1600-h/Holly.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOy7sCnuH7brdFLRxTDhy19VNqmBa5hhHsVbm3Rx5Nlr2FJpAWZYAQYIDMtwLw6_1sw8ICyXt2i4uC291_E7oC5UJMDdw0EMd_-tpYIv7rxfWITSA2DpDlBEq-Y0dtUtaulFbk52nDgqU/s320/Holly.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5440594095079832258" /></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:'times new roman';">Art has always been my passion, but after having kids, I found that it was hard to find time for my art. Not only was time at a minimum, so was cash flow. So many women go through this stage only to find that their kids are surpassing them in skill and knowledge. The age of the internet is here and it sure has changed how most of us work. Everything has become, bigger, faster, better, and cheaper. Cheaper? Really? For the client maybe, but not for the creative. Technology constantly changes, software updates come frequently, and the amount of investment (time and money) required for a self employed creative has become hard to comprehend. So why try too relaunch my business in this tough economy? Passion. Passion for my art, the printed word, organized, clean, bold, and unique—coexisting with image. Image and word together create a memory, and the more precise I can make them together, the more memorable they become. This is why I love working with clients on business identity. A strong logo always has a concept behind it. More than just words and image, a concept will make people remember your business identity. A logo is only the beginning of business identity. Identity should be carried throughout your business—from internet to invoice. My job is as much about getting to know what people are about and what they love to do as it is about my creativity. In fact, it is more important for me to get to know my clients than for me to be artistic. How else could I design a logo for my client that makes people remember their business. </span></span>Holly Herickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00315599481439237858noreply@blogger.com0
